Kuntala Kumari Sabat

 

 

Kuntala Kumari Sabat was born in the backward province of Jagdalpur. Her Grandfather was from a Brahmin family of Danda Mukundapur of Puri district. Her mother was from a 'karan' family. Due to some problems they were converted to Christians but never left the Hindu Culture because of their love of the culture & tradition. Her father Daniel Sabat was a doctor. He was studying at Bastar & later moved to Burma. She stayed in Burma with her father till the age of 14.

She stayed in Khurda for sometime after returning from Burma. She read in Ravenshaw Girls High School & passed her L.M.P. with distinction from Cuttack Medical School in 1921. She was also awarded a Gold Medal. She started her Medical Practice under Dr. Kailash Chandra Rao from 1921 to 1928. She started practicing independently after 1928. She was also awarded a Gold Medal. She started her medical practice after completing the medical exam under Dr. Kailash Chandra Rao from 1921 to 1928. She was the first lady Doctor in Cuttack. She was the Lady Health visitor of Red Cross Society in 1925. She left for Delhi in 1928. She converted to Christianity and adopted ‘Brahma Dharma’ to marry Dr. Kailash Chandra Rao but could not marry him. Later she got married to to Krushna Prasad Das who was a ‘Brahmachari’ and a social reformer on 8th August 1928. She adopted ‘Arya Dharma’ for this. She was blessed with two sons and two daughters. At the time of her death she had only one son and one daughter alive.

While studying in Ravenshaw Girls High School she got award for her poem. She used to write from her student career till her death. She wrote many poems like 'Anjali', ‘Uchhwas’, ‘Archana’, ‘Spuling’, ‘Awhan’, ‘Prem Chintamani’, ‘Oriyanka Kandana’ etc. Her novels include ‘Bhranti’, ‘Na Tundi’, ‘Kali Bohu’, ‘Parasmani’, ‘Raghu Arakhita’, ‘Chitrapat’ etc. Her poems comprised of patriotism, a description of flood and drought, sorrow of degradation of culture and awakening people for growth of culture. His novels represented family life, social stature, society, culture etc. She was also a good writer in Hindi Literature. Many institute in Delhi had honored her as the 'Leader of Indian Poets'. She had also gained expertise in Bengali, English & Burmese languages. To improve oriya literature she formed an association called 'Bharati Topavan Sangha' in Delhi. She was honored as “Utkal Bharati” by Mahila Bandhu Samiti in 1925. Many of her poems have been translated in different Indian languages and also in English. These poems have been praised by all.
