The govt. of Orissa has been urging several financial institutions to encourage the establishment of new industrial units in backward states. It has been asking the central Government to initiate such policies in regard to licensing fiscal; financial matters to encourage to establish the new industrial units in the state. Since Independence 49 large Scale industries have been setup in public and Private Sector in the state, of which most of them are mineral based.


Govt. of India concluded contracts with the leading steel manufacturing companies of other countries during 1954-56 for the establishment of modern integrated and iron plants on package deal basis . This was a great step towards the laying of a stable foundation for the industrial development of the country. As a result, a German combine of West Germany built on integrated iron steelwork at Rourkela in Sundargarh district on northern Orissa. Rourkela is connected by railways with calcutta and other industrial towns of West Bengal. Being located at Calcutta-Mumbai railway line it is conveniently connected with industrial towns of modren India.

 

The Aeronautical Industry

The MIG  Engine  factory at Sunabeda near Koraput  is a landmark in the industrial development  of Orissa. This factory was established in collaboration with the former USSR.


Agro-
Based Industries

Amongst the agro-based industries, the jute mill at Dhanamandal in Jajpur district, is the most important. Raw jute is being supplied from the jute growing belt of the Mahanadi-Brahmani delta.

Cement

There are two cement factories in the state located at Rajgangpur in Sundergarh district and Baragarh in Sambalpur district.  The factory at Rajgangpur, named as the Orissa Cement Ltd., was established in pursuance of an agreement in December 1948, between the state of Orissa and M/s Dalmia Jain Agencies Ltd.

The other cement factory named ‘The Hira cement Works’ was set up at Bardol near Bargarh by the Industrial Development Corporation of Orissa.

Fishery

1.      AQUA CULTURE 

Prawn culture has assumed great significance since 1982-83 when brackish water prawn culture started. It is being expanded as Orissa has a long coastline covering old Cuttack, Puri, Balasore and Ganjam districts.


In the coastal region of the state,1,263 mechanised boats and 3,500 country  craft  are operating from fishing centres  like Chandipur, Chudamani, Salugaon, Kalupadgha, Pathara and Najari, where fishing jetties have been constructed. At Gopalpur, Dhamara and Astarang all-weather fishing ports have been built. While at Paradeep a large deep sea fishing  port has come up. When Paradeep is fully operational  it will have a fleet of 50 deep sea fishing vessels and 500 mechanised boats.


Recently, Orissa shrimp seed production centre (OSSPC) which is the only one of its kind in the country has been started. This centre is cultivating 'Bagda' type prawn which fetches a very high price in foreign markets.

2.      FRESHWATER FISHING

Freshwater resources have been estimated to be 80,000 ponds of various sizes, 4,000 Km of river channels and canals and 0.25 million hectares of reservoirs which are suitable for fresh water fish cultivation, for which there is a ready local market. The catch finds a ready market either in Calcutta or in Orissa. The Kaibartas of Ganjam, the Nolias of Puri, the Gokhas of Cuttack and the Keatas of Balasore are the principal social groups who depend primarily on fishing. The Hirakud, Balimela, Salandi and the Bhimakurd reservoirs are the potential places for fish culture.

Another fertilizer plant is located at Talcher in Dhenkanal District. It produces 495,000 tonnes of Urea and 228,000 tonnes of Nitrogen.

The Indian Farmers and Fertilizers Corporation Ltd. is located at Baragarh. It produces mixed fertilizer.

Jayshree Chemical Limited: This plant is located at Ganjam on the banks of the Rushikulya. It is producing caustic soda discharging its waste into the Rushikulya because of which the river is being polluted. Besides, the east coast salt and chemical factory is operating at Sumandi.


Forest Based

Orissa state is enriched with vast forest resources. There is a vast scope for the forest based industries as: wooden furniture, seal seed oil, neem oil, natural gums, biri making, agarbati sticks, palm rose oil, mahua rectified spirit, manufacturing of cane, ayurvedic medicine, plywood, resins, mulberry silk, leaf plates, bee keeping for honey processing etc.

Orissa, though not that much developed in other industrial sectors , but in the field of Information technology it is a very advance state in India. The hub of Information Technology of the state is National Informatics Centre  In addition Software Technological Park, OCAC, Orissa State Electronic development Corporation, and above all the Info City, which attracts large number of companies to set up their venture here, are major IT development agencies.

NITPU is the ISP for the Orissa state. It provides web hosting services, internet connectivity, providing e-mail facilities to various Government Departments ,Public Sectors and educational institutes. Orissa State Electronics Development Corporation

The Orissa State Electronics Development Corporation (OSEDC), a wholly owned corporation of the Govt. of Orissa, has been designated as the nodal organization for promotion of the IT sector in the state. It is a promotional organization without any commercial goal. Information Technology Department, Govt. of Orissa, is the administrative department for OSEDC.

Orissa Computer Application Centre

At OCAC, the ERNET India under Ministry of Information Technology (MIT), Government of India has established one of the 12 Transit Nodes which are located in reputed R&D and Educational Institutions in the Country including IITs and IISc for internet connectivity with advanced educational content.


Software Technology Park of India(STPI)

Mining

The Orissa Mining Corporation (OMC) was set up by Union & State Government in the first decade of Country's independence. It was the first PSU in Orissa. By 1962, OMC became wholly state owned. Geologically, two-third of Orissa is pre-Cambrian rocks, which have long been known to harbour many metallic & non-metallic minerals. The State has about 97% of Chromite, 71% of bauxite, 33% of iron, & 32% of manganese resources in India. 

Daitari Iron Ore Project - Located at Daitari, connected by a railway line to Paradip port. This is the flagship of OMC's operation. The mine is fully mechanized with an ore handling plant comprising a crushing plant and a washing plant connected by a 3.8km long belt conveyor. It is designed to handle 2 million tonnes of iron ore annually to produce washed lumps, calliberated ore & fines. 

Kaliapani Chrome Ore Project - The largest chrome ore deposit of the country. The Chrome Ore beneficiary plant, with a total production capacity of 84,000 tonnes of concentrate, is designed to upgrade low-grade ore below 33%. Keeping in mind the increasing demand of Chrome Concentrate, OMC is in the process of doubling the capacity of this plant.

Sericulture

Sericulture is an agro-based industry having very high potential in rural Orissa. sericulture is high employment  oriented, requires low investment and brings high return. It has a low gestation  period, can help earn a lot of foreign exchange and is non-polluting. Orissa is second to Bihar  in the manufacture of Tassar with a production of about  10 tonnes per annum. This variety of silk is mostly manufactured in old Mayurbhanj, Sundergarh, Kendujhar, Sambalpur and Koraput district. The Tassar  worms thrive mostly  on the shorea robusta (sal), Terminalia arjuna and Terminalia  tomentosa. All these trees are found in abundance in the forests of Orissa. Sericulture which started in Orissa 1926 in Cuttack, Puri and Ganjam districts  gradually spread to sundergarh, phulabani and Koraput districts. Mulberry silk is much less important compared to Tassar and Eri  in Orissa. Since1981, the Bivoltive Sericulture Development project has been taken up by the state Government. It covers  areas in R.Udayagiri and Mohana blocks and in old  Koraput, Ganjan, phulabani, Kalahandi, Cuttack, Puri, samblapur and Kendujhar districts.
